Wheelchair Airport Transportation with Comfort and Care

Traveling to or from the airport with a loved one who uses a wheelchair can be stressful without the right support.  At Protego Transport, we specialize in Non-Emergency Transportation (NEMT) that makes the process smooth, safe, and worry-free for both patients and families.

Our wheelchair-accessible vehicles are equipped with spacious interiors that not only provide a secure and comfortable ride for passengers but also leave ample room for luggage, carry-ons, and personal items. Whether you’re heading out on a family trip or welcoming a loved one home, you can count on us to handle the details so you can focus on the journey ahead.

Because airport transportation requires precise timing and limited availability, we strongly encourage you to make your reservations as far in advance as possible. This ensures we can accommodate your preferred schedule, assign the right vehicle for your needs, and give you peace of mind knowing your ride is confirmed.

With professional drivers trained in wheelchair safety and assistance, we take pride in offering reliable, on-time service that makes your airport experience as stress-free as possible. From the moment we pick you up until we deliver you safely at the terminal, our team is here to support you and your family every step of the way.

"Don't let mobility limit your happiness!"  Protego Transport will help get you to your destination!

Washington Dulles International (IAD)

Services & accessibility features

  • Dulles offers disability services; airport shuttles (between terminals or to parking / ground transportation) are equipped with wheelchair lifts or ramps and audible announcements.

  • The AeroTrain people mover system connects the main terminal and the concourses (A, B, C) underground.

  • The airport works with Travelers Aid to assist travelers; many volunteer “mobile guides” and information desks are available throughout the airport.

  • Wheelchair service is typically provided by the airline under contract (or by ground‐handling contractors) rather than by the airport itself.

What to expect & tips

  • Airlines are obligated under U.S. law (Air Carrier Access Act) to provide assistance through the airport (from curb or terminal entrance to gate, through security, and to the aircraft) for passengers who self-identify as needing it.

  • If you are traveling with a battery-powered wheelchair or mobility device, it’s wise to notify your airline in advance, because special handling may be required.

  • Because of the distances between terminals, concourses, and gates, having wheelchair assistance well coordinated is important (especially if you have tight connections).

  • At Dulles, wheelchair “helpers” (contracted personnel) often await near check-in counters or gates. Some travelers report that these individuals expect tips (though tipping is voluntary). (Note: these are not airport employees per se, but third-party service providers.)

  • Arrive early. Delays in gate changes or coordination of wheelchair transfers can happen, so building in buffer time is prudent.

Reagan National Airport (DCA)

Services & accessibility features

  • Reagan National offers disability services; its shuttle buses (between terminals, parking, etc.) are equipped with wheelchair lifts and audible announcements.

  • Wheelchairs can be arranged in any terminal via your airline or a Skycap / gate staff. It’s best to notify your airline ahead of time that you will need wheelchair service.

  • Some taxi operators serving the airport have wheelchair-capable vehicles; if you need one, it is recommended to contact the taxi operator in advance.

  • For those parking or being dropped off, there are accessible parking spaces, and design features in the garages to support accessibility.

What to expect & tips

  • Because DCA is relatively compact compared to some large international hubs, the walking distances can be more manageable — but still nontrivial, depending on the departure gate, terminal, or concourse.

  • If connecting between terminals or gates, you may need to traverse secure zones, so coordination with airline wheelchair staff is essential.

  • As with all U.S. commercial airports, airlines are required to provide assistance under the Air Carrier Access Act (movements to/from gates, through security, baggage assistance if needed).

  • Use TSA Cares: You can request assistance during the screening process (e.g. remaining seated during screening, escorting through security) by contacting TSA Cares at least 72 hours in advance.
