Non-Emergency Stretcher Transportation

Why Stretcher Transport Matters

Protego Transport provides safe and dependable non-emergency stretcher transportation for patients who cannot sit upright for extended periods, are medically fragile, or require transport while lying flat. This service is an essential link in the healthcare system, directly supporting hospitals, emergency departments, post-acute care centers, and rehab facilities in meeting their daily mission of delivering timely, compassionate care.

Many patients are discharged from hospitals, emergency rooms, or rehab programs in conditions that make standard wheelchair or ambulatory transportation unsafe. Attempting to move these patients without proper equipment or training puts them at risk of:

  • Falls, injuries, or strain during transfers

  • Medical setbacks from being forced upright too soon

  • Delays in discharge due to a lack of proper transportation arrangements

Protego Transport fills this critical gap by offering safe, stretcher-equipped vehicles and trained personnel to ensure smooth, secure, and timely transport.

Protego Transport supports area facilities by providing non-emergency stretcher transportation.

What Our Stretcher Transportation Includes

  •  Door-through-door or bedside-to-bedside service: We coordinate with facility staff to transfer the patient from their room, bed, or ER bay directly onto our stretcher for safe transport.

  • Specialized equipment: Our vehicles are equipped with professional stretchers and locking systems to keep patients stable and secure throughout the trip.

  • Trained staff: Our team is skilled in safe patient handling, transfers, and stretcher securement to minimize risk and maximize comfort.

  • Facility coordination: We work closely with nurses, case managers, and discharge planners to ensure seamless transitions of care.

  • Routine and return trips: Whether it’s a one-time hospital discharge or recurring transport to dialysis, wound care, or rehab appointments, we provide consistent, reliable service.

Who Benefits from Stretcher Transportation?

Patients recently discharged from hospitals or ERs who cannot sit upright safely

Individuals in rehab or post-acute care programs requiring transport to therapies or follow-up care

Patients recovering from surgery, fractures, or illness where mobility is severely limited

Facilities needing timely, reliable discharges and patient transfers to keep operations running smoothly

Supporting Healthcare Facilities in Their Mission

Hospitals and post-acute providers rely on safe, efficient patient flow to keep beds available and services running smoothly. Protego Transport partners with facilities by:

  • Assisting with patient discharges: Helping hospitals and ERs discharge patients safely and on time, freeing up beds for incoming patients.

  • Reducing delays: Eliminating the bottlenecks caused by waiting for ambulance availability for non-emergency needs.

  • Providing routine transport: Supporting rehab and post-acute care centers by transporting patients to and from essential appointments, therapies, and follow-ups.

  • Enhancing patient satisfaction: Offering a professional, respectful, and safe alternative to costly emergency ambulance transport.

Personnel Training & Development

At Protego Transport, we recognize that our staff is our greatest asset.  We are committed to recruiting, training, developing, and retaining competent, reliable, and professional personnel who prioritize both safety and compassionate care.

Our driver evaluation and training programs are fully compliant with the requirements of the State of Virginia and the Department of Motor Vehicles.  Every applicant must successfully complete a physical exam, background check, and drug and alcohol screenings, both pre-hire and randomly, throughout their employment.

Once hired, drivers undergo a structured training program led by senior drivers and overseen by management. This instruction typically spans 2 - 4 weeks, depending on the driver’s prior experience and demonstrated ability.

Safety remains the cornerstone of our program. All drivers must pass a behind-the-wheel road test assessing vision, memory, reaction time, physical function, and cognition. Beyond safe vehicle operation, drivers receive hands-on instruction in the use of wheelchairs, hydraulic lifts, and securing devices, as well as the proper loading, securing, and unloading of ambulatory, wheelchair, and stretcher patients.

Equally important is our emphasis on privacy and compliance. Drivers are thoroughly educated on HIPAA regulations, as well as facility-specific policies and procedures. To maintain the highest standards, they are also required to complete periodic re-certifications and remain subject to ongoing drug and alcohol testing.
