How to Choose the Right Medical Transportation Without Worry

The right level of medical transportation depends on how your loved one moves today, not on their diagnosis. If they can walk with a little support, ambulatory transport is usually the fit. For someone who relies on a wheelchair or can’t manage steps, wheelchair transport keeps them seated in their own chair the whole way. And when they need to lie flat or can’t sit upright safely for the whole ride, stretcher transport is the right choice.

Below is a plain-language guide to all three levels of non-emergency medical transportation, the questions that help you decide, and what to do when you’re still not sure.

Ambulatory Transport: For Riders Who Can Walk With Some Help

Ambulatory transport is the most independent level of medical transportation. It’s for passengers who can walk on their own or with a cane or walker. They just shouldn’t be driving or navigating a busy medical campus alone. For instance, think of a parent heading to therapy, a minor follow-up, or a routine specialist visit.

“Can walk” doesn’t mean “doesn’t need help.” In fact, unsteady balance, fatigue after treatment, confusion in unfamiliar buildings, and long hallways are all real risks. That’s why every Protego ambulatory ride is door-through-door. We walk alongside your loved one from their front door or room, into the vehicle, and all the way to check-in.

Wheelchair Transport: For Riders Who Stay Seated

Wheelchair transport is for passengers who use a wheelchair full time, can’t manage stairs or a vehicle step, or tire too quickly to walk any real distance. Your loved one rides in their own wheelchair, secured inside an ADA-compliant Ford Transit with a hydraulic lift. As a result, there’s no transfer into a car seat and back again.

Families often choose wheelchair transport for dialysis, chemotherapy, cardiac and pulmonary rehab, and other recurring appointments. It’s also often the right call for someone who can walk short distances at home but struggles with parking lots, curbs, and long clinic corridors.

Stretcher Transport: For Riders Who Need to Lie Flat

Stretcher transport is for passengers who can’t sit upright safely for the length of the trip. Common situations include going home after surgery or a hospital stay, or moving between care settings. It also fits when weakness, pain, or medical restrictions make a seated ride unsafe.

Stretcher transport is non-emergency medical transportation. It’s not an ambulance, and it’s not the right choice for anyone who needs medical monitoring or treatment on the way. For an emergency, call 911. However, for planned, stable moves where lying flat is simply the safest way to travel, it’s the gentle option. If you’re arranging one after a hospital stay, our guide to stretcher transport home from the hospital walks through the process.

How to Choose the Right Level of Medical Transportation

A few honest questions usually settle it:

  • Can they walk from their bed or chair to the front door today without a wheelchair? If yes, ambulatory may work. If not, start with wheelchair.
  • Can they sit upright comfortably for the entire ride, including traffic? If not, stretcher is safer.
  • Has a doctor or discharge planner given positioning instructions? Follow those first. They know your loved one’s restrictions.
  • How do they do at the end of an appointment, not just the start? Treatments like dialysis or chemotherapy can leave someone far more tired going home than coming in.
  • Are there stairs, a long walk, or a tight entrance at either end? Tell us up front so we can plan the safest route in and out.

When in doubt, choose the level that fits their hardest moment of the day. After all, it’s easier to plan for extra support than to discover mid-trip that the ride doesn’t fit. Let us know about any special needs when you book, such as a bariatric passenger or an extra assistant. That way the right vehicle and help are ready.
